Bird Description

Fairly common in wet swampy s. woodland, but also drier deciduous forest in N. Tough to see as it flits around, usually higher in the canopy than other flycatchers. Listen for song — an emphatic ‘wake-up/pizza.’ Often rapidly repeated ‘pip’ notes. Adult molts late summer on breeding ground. ID: A larger empid with a long broad-based bill (mostly orange) and sloping crown peaking behind eye. Long, broad tail. Primary projection long. Fairly distinct white eyering with extensive pale loral area. Plumage varies, sometimes with green upperparts like YBFL but others duller. Underparts usually have yellow wash across breast. Adult: wing bar buff but often appears white through summer. Juv: wing bar orange-buff.
