Bird Description

Fairly common n. breeder in wet areas near scrub and trees. Favors forest and field edges on migration. Arrives on breeding grounds mid-May onwards. Most migrate later than WIFL in fall. Formerly conspecific with WIFL. Song, ‘fee-beo,’ more monotone than similar but more emphatic ‘fitz-bew’ of ALFL. WIFL occasionally gives a more Alder-like song. Call a ‘pip’ — different from other empids. ID: In many respects, intermediate between LEFL and ALFL. Larger than LEFL with longer and broader tail. Bill is broader-based and longer. Longer primary projection. Plumage similar to LEFL: variable, often gray-headed and green-backed, others more uniformly olive-brown with fairly prominent eyering. Juv: buff wing bars.
