Bird Description
Uncommon colonial nester on rocky islands and winters far offshore. Rarely seen from shore. ID: Medium-sized and compact with big neck and head. Mindblowing bill. Black collar sets off face (white in summer, gray in winter). Adult at 4 years, bill becoming larger with more ridges. Smaller and duller in winter. 1st-year birds have smallest and darkest bills. Darkish underwing and no white trailing edge to upperwing. Orange feet striking.
