Bird Description
Uncommon in W, usually near water. Very rare in E. Sits low and darts out over water to catch insects. Slim and elegant with long tail and fine bill. Tail is pumped up and down, less deliberately than EAPH. In all plumages, 2-tone colors distinctive. Adult: gray-black, slightly paler on back, but sometimes with a hint of brown. White belly and vent sharply demarcated, extends to center of breast — a very clean look. Juv: similar with rusty-fringed coverts and tertials. Molts into adult-type plumage late summer.
