Bird Description

Very common breeder in conifers. Migrants found anywhere. A late migrant spring and fall. At times the commonest warbler; on spring migration it can be heard in suburbs, or just about anywhere, singing simple insect-like ‘tsee tsee tsee tsee tsee.’ ID: Large, sleek, long-winged, an athlete designed to fly long distances over water. Plumages variable but all have long bold wing bars, long primary projection, green or gray upperparts with dark streaks, and white undertail coverts. Ad ♂ br: white cheek, black cap, whisker, and breast streaking — distinctive. Ad ♀ br: variable, with underparts from white to yellow with fine streaks. Upperparts gray to olive with dark streaks. 1st-s: similar to adults with a some imm feathers. All fall birds similar with mostly olive upperparts, yellow wash on breast/throat with diffuse streaks. Ad ♂ has boldest black streaks on upperparts and fine streaks on flanks. 1st-yr ♀: the palest. Nearly all have orange feet, often extending up legs.
