Bird Description

Uncommon in s. TX riparian woods. Very rare winter visitor to s. FL and LA. Tends to stay deep and high in vegetation. Call a usually emphatic ‘whip.’ Song a rolling ‘whip-will-do.’ ID: Same size or slightly larger than GCFL, usually with noticeably larger bill. Plumage is like a bright ATFL but with duller wing bars and tertial fringes. GCFL has darker upperparts and throat, deeper yellow on belly and bolder white fringes to tertials. Slightly more extensive dark edge to undertail than GCFL. W. race magister — larger with bigger bill than cooperi — has occurred in region.
