Bird Description

Rare but under-recorded. Easy to confuse with Selasphorus due to similar color patterns. ID: Smaller and squat with deep belly emphasized by short square tail. Short bill. Flight feathers broad and of even width — importantly, the wing point is at least up to and typically past the tail tip. Limited rufous at base of tail. Often show narrow white line above gape. Ad ♂: streaked purple gorget, pointed at corners. ♀/imm: pale peach flanks. Throat often finely streaked.
