Bird Description

Fairly common in areas with long grass. Usually stays hidden and is easiest to see perched on fences or at water holes. Call a 2–3 note ‘kiddle,’ also a rattle. Song: meadowlark-like but softer. ID: Ad ♂ br: striking. Ad ♂ nonbr/ad ♀/1st-yr: highly variable. Many birds have chestnut on nape similar to LALO but have different breast pattern and lack rufous in wing. Duller birds from similar MCLO by dark rear ear covert patches, dark-centered median coverts, triangular dark center to tail, narrower base to bill, longer tail, shorter primary projection and wing point, and more heavily marked underparts.
