Bird Description

Fairly common in tall grass and brushy fields with bushes. In winter, joins flocks with other sparrows. Regular on E Coast in fall. In summer, habitat different from similar CHSP. Song: several buzzes at one pitch. ID: Similar to CHSP and BRSP. From CHSP in breeding plumage by habitat, bolder black streaks on back, black crown and lateral cheek stripe. Nonbr/1st-w: buffier, paler and less contrasting appearance overall including brown rump. Always confirm ID with pale loral area. Pale gray nape stands out but is not diagnostic. Crown has bolder stripe, lacks rufous.
