Bird Description
Common breeder and migrant in W, increasingly rarer in E. Found on lakes, ponds, and water treatment facilities. In winter most move to milder areas and coastal bays. Breeds in colonies. Nest is simple, consisting of floating vegetation. In winter often found in groups. ID: A fluffy-looking grebe with habit of sitting very high in water, showing large exposed gray rear end. In nonbr, lacks clean-cut appearance of HOGR, shows dusky neck and cheek patch. Large head with steep forehead and contrasting fine upturned bill (hard to see at distance). Breeding birds have bold yellow plumes on black neck and head. If in doubt, always focus on shape!
