Eurasian Wigeon
Anas penelope
EUWI
Order: Anseriformes | Family: Anatidae (Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl)

Bird Description
Scarce but annual in most states. Usually in flocks of AMWI. Male is grayer than cousin with a mostly red head. Females and young males similar to AMWI. Looks uniform in color with brown, rather than gray, that shows little contrast with the body. The clincher is the gray armpits (striking white in AMWI) but beware of misleadingly quick views. Head shape is subtly different: flatter- and deeper-headed, otherwise structure and behavior similar. Young males similar to adult males by early winter.
