Golden-winged Warbler
Vermivora chrysoptera
GWWA

Bird Description
Uncommon in similar habitat to BWWA. Size, shape, behavior and tail pattern also similar. Song usually 4 high buzzes, the first a high note followed by 3 lower ones. Declining due to encroachment from BWWA; hybridization of these closely related species is common. Striking color pattern. Chickadee-like black bib and dark ear coverts. Yellow forehead and wing panel stand out on an otherwise pale gray bird. ♀ is a subdued version of ♂. 1st-yr as same-sex adult. Brewster’s Warbler (1st-generation hybrid): BWWA-like with paler underparts and yellower wing bars. 2nd-generation backcross (2 types): Brewster’s-like and Lawrence’s —yellow with GWWA head and throat pattern. Many intermediate appearances and song types in hybrids.
