Grasshopper Sparrow
Ammodramus savannarum
GRSP
Order: Passeriformes | Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)

Bird Description
Fairly common in grassland, with or without bushes. Often sits up to sing a couple of notes followed by a mechanical insect-like trill or a jumble of notes. At other times is secretive, staying well hidden. In flight, similar to SASP but with weaker flight, spiky tail, and different color patterns. Usually alone. ID: Typical Ammodramus sparrow, secretive, small and with large head, spiky tail, and intricately patterned upperparts. Large bill, and lack of forehead, give a pointed-head look. Always look for unstreaked orange-buff breast and flanks. Bold eye ring really stands out on a mostly orange face. Black-spotted upperparts are beautifully marked with rufous and gray.
