Bird Description

Uncommon winter visitor in SW, very rare in E. Another skulker that stays on or near the ground in dense shrubbery. Often visits feeders, particularly out of range birds. ID: A distinctive small towhee with a long tail and small head, often with peaked crown. Mostly olive and gray like smaller OLSP. Always check the head pattern: rufous cap and white throat divided by black malar. Cap is slightly duller in winter with gray tips to feathers. 1st-yr: usually duller head pattern with smaller crown. Call a cat-like ‘mewee.’
