Bird Description
Uncommon and tied to fast-flowing streams and rivers on breeding grounds; rocky shores and jetties in winter. Seems to embrace bad weather. Often seen standing on rocks or swimming in small self-contained groups. Appears ’gentle,’ and males are real stunners. ID: A uniquely shaped small duck. Stubby bill on a small head with muscular neck and long tail. Females appear uniform dark brown with bold pale areas on cheeks and in front of eye. Male beautifully patterned in stunning colors. 1st-year male subdued version of adult.
