Bird Description
Uncommon in Great Plains, very rare visitor to E, often at feeders in winter. Found in hedgerows and brush in open areas, often with other Zonotrichia sparrows. Song like WTSP, at one pitch. ID: Largest and heaviest sparrow, its bold head pattern usually stands out. Pink bill and white underparts give it a cleaner look than other sparrows. Ad: gray-headed with solid black crown and bib. Nonbr: brown-headed with patchy black on crown and bill. Shows much variation and often difficult to separate from 1st-w., which has whiter throat bordered by black malar stripe.
