Henslow's Sparrow
Ammodramus henslowii
HESP
Order: Passeriformes | Family: Emberizidae (Buntings and New World Sparrows)

Bird Description
Scarce in grass fields with lots of weeds, also reclaimed strip mines. Winters in wet weedy areas and understory of pine woods. Another skulker that freezes or walks away rather than fly. Best seen singing its weak song, a 'tss-zlik' when often sits on stems but not fully in the open. Sings until Aug. ID: Large head with broad-based bill with strong lime green tones around face (when seen well). Boldly scaled upperparts with bright rufous greater coverts and tertials. Buff breast band with bold black streaks. White eyering. Can look surprisingly like SOSP at distance.
