Uncommon in W. Very rare in E. Uncommon w. counterpart of INBU with which it sometimes hybridizes. Same size, shape, and behavior. Similar call, but LAZB’s song slightly higher-pitched and faster. Ad ♂ br: striking blue head, orange breast, and bold wing bars. Much duller in fall with brown fringes to lighter blue upperparts. Ad ♀/1st-w: from similar INBU by lack of streaking on orange-buff across breast; fringes to coverts and tertials broader and bolder; throat often grayer and lacking hint of malar.
