Fairly common in heavily vegetated marshes and ponds in s. Texas. Very small with slimmish neck and thin bill – no very similar species in range. Appears as a ball of fluff when hunkered down. Tends to be active looking for aquatic food. Aggressive. Variably dark in all plumages. Pale flight feathers obvious in flight.
