Fairly common but local in scrubby open habitat. Visits feeders. Similar to AMGO but differences include smaller size, drab colored wing bars, white at base of primaries, dark underwing coverts, and usually yellow undertail coverts. Ad ♂: black-backed with some birds to w. appearing black-capped with green mixed in mantle. ♀: lacks contrast of AMGO with dull green upperparts and yellow underparts, never with bright white undertail coverts. Song slow jumble of high wheezy notes.
