Bird Description

High-Arctic breeder. Typically migrates far offshore following weed lines and tern movements. Only occasionally chases other birds. Sometimes in groups. Distinctive manner of suddenly stopping with wings raised and dropping to water. ID: Smallest jaeger, some small and buoyant with tern-like flight but others larger, heavier and easily confused with other jaegers. Long, narrow-based wings and tail with flattish undercarriage,, deepest at sternum (like POJA). Pigeon-like head shape with small bill. Typically reduced wing flash, white on outer two primaries. Ad br: small, neat cap contrasts with yellow neck and paler gray-brown back. Very long central tail feathers (but beware, they often break). Ad nonbr: not seen in US. 1st-summer: combination of juv and adult feathers. Juv: massive variation. Colder grays and browns than other jaegers and often noticeably pale-headed. Many have breast band contrasting with paler belly. Blunt central tail feathers.
