Bird Description

Uncommon in cold NE waters (breeds) with a few wintering further s. Sometimes seen from shore. ID: Black-and-white shearwater. Similar to AUSH but slightly larger, with dusky face and white wrapping around ear coverts. White undertail coverts can be seen in flight and in sitting birds. Structurally more compact than AUSH with shorter tail that often looks broad and square-ended. Wings often slightly angled back with bulging secondaries. Tends to arc steeper and higher than AUSH with faster, ‘hurried’ wingbeats.
