Mottled Duck 1

Bird Description

Replaces ABDU in Gulf states and has similar fondness for coastal marshes; but also common in freshwater wetlands. Pairs stick together most of the year so rarely seen in larger groups. Male is a slightly darker version of female. Intermediate in color between ABDU and MALL. Shows strongly dark feather-center patterns as female MALL. Speculum blue but can appear purple with narrow white border. Throat buff and unstreaked. Black spot at base of bill (gape).
