Bird Description

Uncommon and incredibly hardy n. species found in open areas with trees. Some move s. in winter but generally this is a bird of frozen landscapes. Sits on the highest snag, unafraid of the cold, looking for rodents, insects, and other prey. Usually unapproachable. Often disappears for stretches of time, probably sheltering in bushes. ID: Compared to similar LOSH, look for narrow face mask and longer bill, and is also larger, paler with a white eyering. Adult: usually shows barring on underparts. Ist-w: often similar to adult but with some juv wing coverts, others much browner and more heavily barred, often with pale base to bill.
