Olive-sided Flycatcher
Contopus cooperi
Olive-sided Flycatcher Contopus cooperi
OSFL

Bird Description

Widespread but uncommon flycatcher of n. evergreen and mixed forest, particularly near bogs and burns. Sits upright on the tallest snag on the tallest tree to scan the surroundings. After flycatching, typically returns to same snag. Only pewees show similar behavior. Voice loud for a flycatcher, song a ringing 'quick-3-beers.' Call a loud 'pip,' often repeated. ID: A large flycatcher with a noticeably bulky head, thick neck, and broad-based bill. Long-winged with relatively short, wide tail. Dark breast sides contrast strongly with pale throat and central breast. Occasionally shows white tufts near tertials (juvs). EAWP and WEWP are slimmer with narrower base to bill, smaller head, longer tail, and stronger fork at tip. Underpart contrast is stronger on OSFL. Juv: very similar to adult but feathers show less wear and has buffer fringes to coverts.
