Bird Description

Very common in deciduous woodland, though hard to see particularly with leaf litter. Mostly walks, or rather struts, on the floor and occasionally on limbs. Arguably no other bird has as much character as this punk rocker. Moving with exaggerated steps, the head goes backward and forward as though it's tip-toeing through the forest. Usually stays in cover. Explosive song 'teacher teacher teacher' often surrounds you but bird is nowhere to be seen. Loud deep 'chip' note. With patience you can usually spot this thrush-like bird. The big eye is watching you. ID: One plumage. Large and plump with long pink legs, short tail, and rounded head. White underparts with bold black streaks, but it is sometimes the striking eyering that is hard to miss. Black lateral and chestnut crown stripe most obvious when head-on. Crown occasionally raised. 1st-w has rust-fringed tertials.
