Painted Bunting 1

Bird Description

Uncommon in woodland edges and overgrown hedges. Very rare in spring and fall in N, often at feeders. In summer, stunning ♂ sings from high perches. More typically, is found skulking low in brush piles and other denser vegetation. Warbling song intermediate between INBU and WAVI. ID: Ad ♂: dramatic patchwork of varied shades of red, blue, and green, and back can be luminescent in some lights. Ad ♀/1st-w: distinctively colored, variable shades of green, palest in 1st-w ♀; variation makes ageing and sexing difficult. Typically, underparts paler and often yellower than upperparts. 1st-s ♂: some get a few darker adult-like feathers; check to see if it sings!
