Bird Description

A fairly common n. breeder, usually in higher-altitude mixed forest. Varying numbers head s. in winter to open woodland. Outnumbered by similar HOFI just about everywhere and regularly visit the same feeders. Very vocal, sings its long rich warbled song from treetops. Flight undulating, during which will give distinctive ‘plip’ call. ID: Distinctively pot-bellied and large-headed with short tail that is strikingly forked, a striking profile in flight. Bill has straighter edges than HOFI’s. All plumages show strong facial contrast with dark ear coverts, cap and malar. Ad ♂: many have strong crimson pink tones, others are more red. Ad ♀: boldly marked brown and white with strong face pattern and breast streaking. 1st-yr: as adult ♀, though some ♂s have purple tones in upperparts. From HOFI by shape, head pattern, straighter edges to bill, color tones in ♂, and bolder streaking.
