Cardinalis sinuatus

PYRR

Order: Passeriformes | Family: Cardinalidae (Cardinals and Allies)
Pyrrhuloxia 1

Bird Description

Found in desert and scrubby areas with mesquite, in s. TX. Often hops on the ground or sings from bushtops, a higher-pitched version of NOCA’s song. Range overlaps with similar ♀ NOCA but PYRR has a more rounded stubby bill, longer crest, and is slimmer. If in doubt PYRR is the one with the pale bill. All are gray with a red underwing that’s obvious in flight. Ad ♂: red face and line down breast. ♀: uniform gray-buff underparts. Juv: like ♀ but with duller bill.
