Bird Description

Fairly common n. breeder in evergreen forest, particularly spruce and fir. Somewhat irruptive to s. in winter based on food supply. Found in all types of woodland and at feeders. On migration often forms small flocks where can be heard giving its deep nasal 'neep neep neep.' Also found in mixed-species flocks. Very active, often switches direction as it walks, hangs, and descends branches. Much smaller than WHNU, it is frequently found at the end of twigs, hanging on cones looking for food. In flight, striking, short square-ended tail and broad wings. Bouncy flight takes it nowhere quickly. ID: Bold head markings always distinctive on an otherwise gray-and-orange bird. Ad ?: brightest colors, notably black crown. Ad ?: paler with brown crown. Imm: browner wings, ? brighter than ?.
