Bird Description

Fairly common in grassland with scattered vegetation. Rare but regular out of range, particularly late spring. A few winter in s. FL. Often in small groups, they sit delicately on perches in fields or wires waiting to flycatch. Long and elegant with soft colors to match, there are few more striking birds. In flight, crimson axillaries with peach underwing and flanks. Silhouetted birds have straight tails, slightly downcurved in FTFL. Call a 'kip.' ID: Ad ?: similar to ? but has longer tail and brighter peach on flanks and underwing. Juv: much shorter tail, paler underparts, and browner wings. 1st-s: many retained juv wing feathers, medium length tail, and dull underparts; ? brighter than ?.
