Tufted Duck
Aythya fuligula
TUDU
Order: Anseriformes | Family: Anatidae (Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl)

Bird Description
Very rare. Mainly in NE among flocks of scaup or sometimes RNDU. Returning individuals occur. Males, because of their diagnostic dark back, white flanks and head tuft, are usually ones identified. Females tougher: similar to female scaup with small but obvious tuft, flatter head, and uniform darker brown plumage. Most show some scaup-like white around base of bill.
