Bird Description

Rare but regular winter visitor. A real skulker in the densest forest. In cold weather it is often found in gardens or at feeders but still playing hard to get. A loner, it usually feeds on the ground but quickly disappears to higher cover. ID: Smaller than AMRO with a shorter tail and pot belly. Its boldly patterned head and wings in orange and black make it hard to miss or mistake. ♀/imm: browner upperparts and indistinct breast band.
