Winter Wren

Bird Description
Fairly common in dense coniferous forest in summer. In winter, in wetter and boggier areas often with stumps and deep undergrowth. Often heard chipping and, in summer, an explosive warbled song that seems to go on too long, as if making up for bird’s tiny size. Can be very difficult to see, hugging the ground and staying in dense undergrowth — it blends in with background and is tiny. Views tend to be brief, as it’s always on the move. If you know the ‘chimp’ or ‘chimp chimp’ call note, you’ll hear many more birds than you see. ID: Tiny round ball of feathers with a cocked stub for a tail — nothing else like it! Variably colored: all shades of dark brown with a pale supercilium. Some more heavily barred than others (probably mostly juvs).
