Wood Thrush
Hylocichla mustelina
WOTH
Order: Passeriformes | Family: Turdidae (Thrushes and Allies)

Bird Description
Common in mostly deciduous woodland and even densely wooded back yards. Easiest seen coming onto roads to feed though is always quick to fly off. Beautiful fluting song comprises a series of phrases and is always the pick of the dawn chorus. When disturbed, gives a series of angry machine-gunned notes. Flight call a dull flat buzzy ‘neep.’ ID: A really fat thrush with a short tail and big head. Larger than Catharus but not always obviously so. Its richer-colored upperparts, brightest on the nape, are usually noticeable. If in doubt, look for black-flecked ear coverts and a bold eyering. From the front, its large black spots on a white background always stand out.
